Protiate Kaminnia and Sokolyne Oko
Protiate Kaminnia is a group of massive rocks amid the forest, while Sokolyne Oko is a natural stone arch through which you can see the sky and the forested slopes. It is one of the most photogenic natural spots in the Bukovynian Carpathians.

What makes Protiate Kaminnia special
The rocks rise straight out of the forested slope, which makes them seem even bigger than they are. The stone has strange shapes: cracks, ledges, niches and clusters of boulders shaped by wind, water and time. The name refers to the openings right through the rocks — the stone is 'pierced' through.
The best-known of these openings is called Sokolyne Oko, the Falcon's Eye. It frames a view of the forest and sky, which is why most photographs are taken here.
What to see there
Besides the rocks and the arch themselves, it's worth taking in the views around: forested ridges stretch to the horizon, and in clear weather you can see how the mountains flow into one another. Morning and evening light brings out the texture of the rock especially well.
The place suits an unhurried walk and a short rest in nature. Don't climb the steep rocks without experience: the surface can be uneven and damp.
How to prepare
Wear closed shoes with good grip, and bring water, a snack and a raincoat. Part of the route passes through forest, so insect repellent is handy in warm weather. Check the forecast: after rain the rocks and paths are slippery.
It's handy to open the route to the rocks in Google Maps before you set off — the link is below. Mobile signal in the mountains can be unreliable, so download the map in advance.
How to combine it with other places
Protiate Kaminnia pairs well with a calmer walk along the 'Stizhok' eco-trail or a trip to the mountain panoramas of the Nimchych Pass. Over a few days you can see different faces of the Bukovynian Carpathians — rocks, forest and open ridges — and return each evening to the quiet and dinner at Stizhok.
