The 'Stizhok' Eco-Trail and Mala Stizhok

Mount Stizhok is the nearest natural landmark to our complex, and the very peak after which Stizhok is named. The eco-trail leads through the forest on the edge of Berehomet to rock outcrops and viewpoints above the Seret valley.

What the 'Stizhok' eco-trail is

This is a walking trail through the forest on the edge of the village of Berehomet in the Vyzhnytsia district of Chernivtsi region. The path climbs the slope of Mount Stizhok, and after the first few bends the noise of the village gives way to the quiet of beech and fir forest. The route needs no special gear, so it suits both families and guests wanting to start exploring the Bukovynian Carpathians without a demanding hike.

The main feature of the place is the rock formations of Mala Stizhok. The stone outcrops amid the forest look surprisingly massive and contrast well with the soft, forested slopes around them. From the open sections you can see the river valley and the neighbouring ridges.

What you can see along the way

The changing light in the forest makes the best impression: in the morning the trail is cool and shaded, while towards evening the sun lights up the tree trunks and rocks. In spring there is plenty of fresh greenery, in summer the forest offers relief from the heat, and in autumn the slopes turn copper and gold — the views from the viewpoints are at their most striking then.

Observant walkers will notice signs of forest life, moss on the stones and small streams after rain. Please stay on the trodden path on the rocky sections: the stone can be slippery, especially after bad weather.

How to plan the walk

Bring comfortable shoes with a grippy sole, water and a light jacket — the weather changes quickly in the mountains. Clear weather is best for photographing the views, while an overcast day also suits a quiet walk: the forest feels especially atmospheric then.

Before setting off, check the route on a map and let someone know where you're going if you're walking alone. After the walk it's easy to return to Stizhok to rest and enjoy a meal of Bukovynian cuisine.

Who the route suits

The eco-trail is a good choice for your first day, when you want to feel the mountains without a long journey. It suits an unhurried family walk, photography and a short break from the city rhythm. If you want more afterwards, continue exploring the area at Protiate Kaminnia or the Nimchych Pass.
