The Smuharski Waterfalls
The Smuharski waterfalls are a cascade of small waterfalls on a mountain stream near the village of Roztoky in Bukovyna. The water tumbles down rocky steps amid dense forest, forming one of the most picturesque spots in the area.

What the Smuharski Waterfalls are
The waterfalls lie on the stream of the same name, the Smuhar, which runs down from the mountains to the Cheremosh valley. Instead of one tall waterfall there are several cascades here: the water flows from step to step, forming small pools and spray over the rocks. This sequence is what makes the walk so interesting — a new cascade appears after every bend in the trail.
The area is part of Bukovyna's protected natural territories, so it's important to treat the forest and water with care here.
When it's best to go
The waterfalls carry the most water in spring, as the snow melts, and after heavy rain. In summer it stays cool here even in hot weather, and in autumn the cascades are surrounded by yellow and red trees. In winter some of the water may freeze, but the trail is then more demanding and needs extra care.
How to prepare for the walk
The trail along the stream is rocky and damp in places, so shoes with a grippy sole are needed. Bring water, a light snack and a warm layer: it's always cooler near the water. Don't stand on wet stones at the edge of the cascades, and keep an eye on children.
Before the trip, open the route in Google Maps and download the map — mobile signal in the mountains can drop out. The place is popular, so it's best to arrive earlier at weekends.
What to combine the trip with
The road to the waterfalls runs through a picturesque mountainous part of Bukovyna, so the trip combines well with the Nimchych Pass or the area's cultural sites. After a day in nature it's pleasant to return to Stizhok in Berehomet: rest in your room and enjoy a dinner of Bukovynian dishes.
